Sustainable mattress disposal has evolved into a critical environmental challenge.

With landfills struggling to accommodate waste, the need to recycle and repurpose old mattresses has never been greater.

Renewable Recycling, Inc. steps up to this responsibility with innovative recycling solutions. Our programs offer environmentally responsible alternatives for industries and individuals alike!

RRI has refined its recycling process over the years to make a meaningful impact.

We’ve worked tirelessly to improve our recycling methods, striving to make a real difference. Our mission is simple: divert as much waste as possible from ending up in landfills. Thanks to our efforts, we’ve developed a process that allows us to recycle and reuse up to 90% of the materials in each mattress!

But what happens to the last 10%?

These materials don’t go to waste. Instead, we carefully pack them and send them to ReWorld, a trusted partner specializing in converting non-recyclable materials into clean, renewable electricity. Their advanced waste-to-energy facility ensures nothing is left behind in the push for sustainability.

Want to learn more about our Reworld partnership and their incredible work?

Check out our Featured Sustainability Partners section for all the details.

This collaboration has helped us achieve an incredible milestone—a 98.5% recycling rate! It’s proof of what’s possible when innovation and dedication come together for a shared cause.

We’re proud of the progress we’ve made and excited about what lies ahead. Together, we’re reshaping what it means to prioritize sustainability, one mattress at a time!

Understanding Mattress Collection & Recycling

Recycling a mattress involves more than simply breaking it down. It's a thorough process aimed at salvaging nearly all recoverable materials while minimizing environmental harm. Our efforts ensure that discarded mattresses are repurposed to significantly reduce waste and cut carbon emissions.

Once the mattress items arrive at our NYS DEC-Registered Mattress Recycling facility the magic begins!

Here, every step counts toward giving old mattresses a new purpose.

Our Recycling Technicians carefully inspect every bedding item to ensure it’s free from contaminants. Once an item passes our review, we prepare it for the initial stage of decomposition. Materials like metal and wood are separated first, while textiles such as foam, cotton, felt, wool, and similar fabrics move to the shredding phase.

The next step depends on the future purpose of each textile. Some are shredded into smaller pieces, while others are compressed into bales alongside similar materials, ready to be repurposed into new products or applications. This method helps us maximize reuse while minimizing waste.

Anatomy of a Mattress: Materials That Can Be Recycled

Every mattress contains valuable components that can be recycled, such as:

  • Metal Springs: Extracted and melted for reuse in manufacturing.

  • Foam: Transformed into carpet padding or thermal insulation.

  • Textiles (Cotton, Felt, Wool, and Shoddy): Shredded into smaller parts or baled for repurposing in industries like automotive and construction.

  • Wood: Often used as biomass fuel or repurposed into furniture components.

By giving these materials a second life, we effectively reduce reliance on virgin materials, cutting carbon emissions in the process.

Materials That Cannot Be Recycled

While the majority of mattress components can be recycled, certain materials pose challenges:

  • Cement

  • Wood

  • Asphalt

  • Sheet Rock

  • Asbestos / Hazardous materials

  • Porcelain

  • Marble/Precious stones

  • Furniture (aside from bedding items)

  • Batteries

  • Windows & Doors

These non-recyclable parts, carefully removed during sorting, are redirected to waste-to-energy plants for safe disposal.

Recycling old mattresses does more than clear clutter—it supports a healthier planet! By reusing materials, it reduces the carbon footprint of new production. Many virgin materials, like foams and textiles, are made overseas under weak environmental regulations, adding to emissions. Giving these materials a second life helps slash that impact.

Transforming Waste into Usable Materials

Discarded mattress textiles can become useful products like insulation or soundproofing. Repurposing uses far less energy than producing virgin resources, conserving both energy and natural materials. Recycling reduces harm at every stage.

Keeping Mattresses Out of Landfills

Mattresses take up valuable landfill space and release methane as they break down, driving climate change. Recycling avoids these emissions and saves space for better uses. Every mattress diverted means cleaner air and a smaller carbon footprint.
